about a technical deep dive on the new types of AWD systems on the market? I.e. the FWD based systems that are the majority now? I started researching it and I was going to write something up but im not super motivated to do it. On the one hand I like to write and I like seeing “good” oppo content. On the other hand...if no one wants to read it, I could just research it myself and save the effort for something else.

I asked PG13 if they wanted anything and I got a hearty “meh”. Just wondering if it would be something you care to read? or if I should just research it for my edification.

or if you would read something like it...what kind of angle would make you interested in reading it:

why it matters

how is it different

short versus long

etc.

Just thinking about loud. I want to write more again

Enjoy a stupid picture of a stupid man sitting stupidly over a 200 foot drop on the wrong side of the bridge. Getting content, I guess.

If you made a comparasion between 4wd and awd, then focus on the many systems (haldex, permanent, variable, and whatever ferrari calls its dual gearbox monster) I think it would make for a very educational and interesting article!

Yes because all I do is bitch about how something is not 4WD or 4X4 unless it has a two-speed transfer case.

I’d like to see what systems have any extra stability or traction features. I know Honda has VTM-4 Lock which “locks” the rear diff, but I have no idea if other soft-roaders have similar features on their AWD/4WD systems.

I done did that, or something like it a while back. Even got FP attention!

It didn’t have much info on the PTO type systems though.

I would definitely enjoy that, especially if there was some effort in dumbing it down just a bit for the less mechanically knowledgeable crowd (me). Curious about the new systems, and specifically the current sti which I believe had quite the update in it’s awd setup?

Benefits and possible downsides of each system would be interesting to hear about

I was thinking of trading my FWD for a 4WD but not sure if it’s worth it.

Make a new one as a follow up focusing more on awd, which seems to be the tech that most cars get. Try to explain the evils of the haldex system (I joke, it’s pretty cool, until it overheats)

I think you need to start modding the Lexus. Or buy this one for yourself and start modding it.

That does seem to be the big question. I should just write some definitive something about how it totally is or isn’t. You know, because the real answer is a “depends” but in content world its all about absolutes and watching the comment fights.

Are you thinking more of a categorization and a brief overview? I ask as I have rudimentary knowledge of how locking systems work but thats about as far as it goes.

I ask because I had no illusions about offroading when we bought our CX-5 but out of curiosity I did ask the sales lady what kind of AWD it was. I was expecting get a blank look and a “it drives all the wheels” and instead she launched into a surprisingly correct technical answer.

I’d read it. I’d be very interested to read about how the different systems work and why it matters, but perhaps at a length and depth that is....not too long and deep, but enough to help someone assess what type of system is best for their needs. Of course, in the end you and I and everybody else here will scoff at people shopping for AWD crossovers, even though they’re practical and more than sufficient for most people’s needs, and shout at people to buy REAL FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRUCKS GODDAMMIT.

I’m interested - would be a good read, and I’d be curious to know your take on what the plusses and minuses are for the various systems out there (how are they different/why does it matter).

I know enough to know that they’re not all equivalent, and some aren’t what they’re made out to be, but that’s it—

I never quite noticed the mods, I know party-vi (gave me authorship) and I think I saw him deal with someone being mean to miss mercedes many posts ago.

I also know kaycog is a mod, but only because he always posts on cotd and sorta stood out because of it(knew about kay before I knew about oppo)

In the end I think its better not to be noticed, it either means that ya’ll are very efficient at keeping oppo nice and squaky clean, or we’re very well behaved...both results speak nicely of ya’ll.

Either way, mod or not, a good article about AWD probably deserves to be hitched to oppoblog!

I’ve thought about it but damn it’ll be a long article.

PTU type you’ve got Haldex & equivalent (like Magna Dynamax that adds a lock button, and whatever Nissan does with its lock button), torque vectoring stuff like SH-AWD & GKN Twinster, whatever we’re calling FCA’s stuff in the Cherokee/Compass/Renegade, Mitsubishi AWC, maybe even the gerotor Honda stuff?

Mechanical center diffs VLSD vs. Torsen/helical vs. gerotor vs. open.

Active center diffs you have the various Magna supplied systems like BMW xDrive & Cadillac, whatever Range Rovers are rolling with, Subaru VTD and DCCD, Audi Quattro Ultra, oh and let’s throw in the Mitsubishi S-AWC in the Evo since that’s got a proper center diff even though it’s a transverse engine.

Have fun!

That is indeed the challenge. macro or micro. I think there is enough commonality in system types that it should be enough to cover them broadly though. We’ll see as I think Im committed to writing it now. Part of the problem, of course, is getting detailed information on a lot of these manufactures systems.

Exactly. I think I am going to leave out anything with a transfer case, which leaves PTO/PTU systems only. I’ve covered in some detail in the past some of the other systems out there. I aint AWD wiki.

I’d be interested. One of the topics I’ve been wanting to learn more about lately is traction control systems (and similar things). I’m mostly curious to know how they determine when traction has been lost. I know there’s a few formulas on Wikipedia, but surely the guys building systems aren’t going off of that.
